Ryan O’Reilly to be named the Blues’ 23rd captain in club history
Per Sportsnet: Ryan O’Reilly is set to be named the 23rd captain in St. Louis Blues history, The Athletic‘s Jeremy Rutherford reports. Rutherford adds an announcement could come later this week. O’Reilly will replace Alex Pietrangelo, who wore the “C” for four years but left the Blues in free agency to join the Vegas Golden Knights. “He will make a great captain. Good luck to him, no doubt he is the right choice,” Pietrangelo told Rutherford. Ryan O’Reilly (born February 7, 1991) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre and alternate captain for the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has previously played for the Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres. O’Reilly was drafted 33rd overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche, with whom he spent the first six seasons of his NHL career. Nicknamed “the Factor“, O’Reilly is frequently referred to as one of the NHL’s best two-way forwards, winning the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2019. He was missing Rantanen for a large chunk of the season and played serious time with guys like Donskoi, Calvert, and Burakovsky on his line.
