Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin (born 17 September 1985) is a Russian professional ice hockey winger and the captain of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Often referred to as “Ovi” or “the Great Eight“, Ovechkin is widely regarded as one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time.[1][2] Ovechkin began his professional career with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Superleague, playing there for four seasons from 2001 until 2005 and returning briefly during the 2012–13 NHL lockout. Per NHL.com: Alex Ovechkin said he has no intention of playing for any NHL team other than the Washington Capitals. “It’s not a question of money,” he told Russian Television International this week. “It’s a matter of principle: I played for only two teams, Dynamo [Moscow] and Washington.” Ovechkin is entering the final season of a 13-year, $124 million contract he signed with Washington on Jan. 10, 2008, but he told RTI that he plans to remain with the Capitals for the rest of his NHL career.
